Until recently, it has been the widely held belief that the Sun Stone is a huge calendar, and thus it has become universally known as the Aztec Calendar. There are, however, several different interpretations. There is still no definitive answer to the mystery of why the monolith was made or what its purpose was. ![]() The Purpose of the Sun Stone An example of a gourd bowl used to collect human entrails after sacrifice, via Fordham Univ. Luckily, the predictions were not accurate in this case, but the amount of attention the claim attracted demonstrates the long lasting influence of Aztec culture across the globe. In 2012, the Calendar once again came into the spotlight as conspiracy theorists claimed that it foretold the imminent end of the world. ![]() So important is the monolith to Mexican culture, that its coins are based on the Calendar’s structure, with each denomination showing part of the circular design. Today, the Calendar is housed in Mexico’s National Anthropology Museum, where it attracts huge crowds of visitors, eager to figure out the mystery of the Sun Stone for themselves. The Sun Stone has left a great legacy, not only in history and academia, but also in popular culture. The Legacy of the Sun Stone The Sun Stone in the National Anthropology Museum Beaten by the wind, rain, and the bullets of American soldiers, the stone was gradually eroded, until it was rehoused at the National Museum in 1885. The Spanish monarchs who then ruled Mexico displayed the Sun Stone on the side of the Metropolitan Cathedral, as evidence of the empire’s rich history. In 1790, the Aztec Calendar was unearthed by laborer’s working on the plumbing system in the city. The Spanish conquerors stated that the Sun Stone had been carved seven years before their invasion, in 1512, although given that they also claimed it took 10,000 men to drag the rock, their records should not be relied upon for accuracy. It was found that a glyph in the central disk represented the name of the Aztec ruler, Moctezuma II, who ruled between 15.Īlthough the Aztec Empire expanded to its peak under the reign of Moctezuma, it also eventually fell victim to the conquistadores, who took over the capital (now Mexico City) after the ruler himself was killed. ![]() This is thought to represent a demand for blood through human sacrifice.Īlthough it was previously thought that the monolith was carved in the late 15th century, new evidence and research have led scholars to different conclusions. What makes the image particularly ominous is that the figure is shown baring its dagger-like tongue and clutching a human heart in its claws. Although there are debates about who (or what) is depicted, most commentators believe that it shows the sun god Tonatiuh, one of the most important deities in the Aztec pantheon. These represent a selection of native animals, like crocodiles, jaguars and eagles natural elements, including wind, water and rain some rudimentary markers of civilization, such as houses shared features of humanity, including movement and death.Īt the very center is the haunting face of a deity or a monster. The circular front panel, which has a huge diameter of around 11.5ft, displays eight concentric circles, on which appear various symbols. ![]() The Aztec Calendar, also known as the Sun Stone, is a monumental sculpture which weighs a mammoth 24,590kg and slightly over 3ft thick. ![]() A MoCA adapter allows additional routers to receive an internet signal directly from your modem through the existing coax cable in your walls. However, almost everyone has coax running in their house for cable TV and that is where MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) comes in. Obviously, the best way to extend WIFI is to have your house wired with ethernet cables, but how many people have that? Answer: not many. That's not very efficient for larger houses or houses that don't have an open floor plan. The problem is the range extender cuts down the WFI signal by 50% and it and the mesh nodes only work well when they're in sight of each other. WIFI range extenders and mesh systems take the signal from the home router and try to bounce it to the range extender or mesh node, which then tries to bounce it to the next node and so on. I thought I was tech-savvy, but I clearly wasn't because I wasted a lot of money on WIFI range extenders and mesh systems that never worked well. I'm stunned at how well these MoCA coax adapters work and how easy they are to set up. HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you have the option to use coax as a backhaul - this was an awesome improvement and I wish I'd discovered this earlier! Measured speed improved from 268/356Kpbs to 869/904Kbps. Orbi took about 5 minutes to reconfigure itself to use the new wired backhaul. ![]() Install was a breeze, no special config needed. I saw these Ethernet over coax devices and I was skeptical but decided it was worth a try (have coax already installed at both points, the junction is in the downstairs near the satellite). I set up a job on my server attached to the satellite to periodically run the speedtest docker container so I could consistently measure the speed off the satellite router. Orbi's speed test (at the upstairs main router) always looks good. I've been seeing sporadic speed and latency drops at the satellite lately. The system is believed to have come into use in England around 1300 and was used in the international wool trade. It is based on the avoirdupois system, a system that uses weights in terms of the avoirdupois pound, which was standardized in 1959. History/origin: Pound-force per square inch is a unit that originated in the imperial and US customary systems of units. One psi is approximately 6,895 pascals (N/m 2). Pound-force per square inchĭefinition: A pound-force per square inch (symbol: psi) is an imperial and US customary unit of pressure based on avoirdupois units. Getting to put my business logic in Kotlin is great, but being able to define typing for external JS, including npm packages was neat, a little tricky and very satisfying. KotlinJs is, while still feeling cutting edge, feels surprisingly well supported. Writing a UI focused single page web app in Kotlin has been surprisingly exciting, and in the first 20 days I slammed down over 130 commits. Impressed by its JS interop, general ecosystem and simply by how unexpectedly often things "just worked", I decided to give it a go for a larger project like this. ![]() Lately I've flirted a bit with KotlinJS, first as part of the Quest Command multiplatform effort, and then in a spike at work. I've used the normal JS frameworks, used game frameworks that compiled to JS (most the games on my main page are built in KorGE), used Kotlin Multiplatform to run Quest Command as Js in the browser, and even built sites (like this one and my main page) with no JS at all. Due to being client side focused, I also figured I could easily host it on github pages to get something live quickly. The best UI experience I've had is with HTML and CSS, and given the ubiquity of browsers, a web app made sense for being both desktop and mobile. No need to re-import the data every time you viewed the appĪs I've spoken about in my blog on quest command, I generally hate doing UI work as it always seems the slowest process of any project I work on. Design DecisionsĪccess the app on both desktop and mobileĪbility to add additional info to the characters The game's save files are in json, and the legacy has a built in 'character export' that let's you export character data as well as separate png files for both their body and head. I wanted to spend more time in that world, without having to load the game up. I was really looking for a game that had good characters, a narrative focus, and RPG elements and happened on Wildermyth by finding a random glowing review of it through my RSS feed. You're not just catching new heroes, but you're watching them evolve in both their skills and their histories and relationships. This adds an interesting Pokemon aspect to the game. Characters that live to the end of a campaign (essentially a complete story) go to live in your "player legacy" and can be re-recruited for future stories. The game's common praise is that players become more attached to the procedurally generated and storied heroes than they do to fully authored characters in linear games. They get married, confront their pasts, can lose their limbs or life in battle, and go through major transformations. They start as farmers and grow into famed warriors. Wildermyth is a wonderful procedural narrative game where you recruit randomly generated characters and then watch them change over their lives.
